DAY BY DAY ITINERARY
Distance: 9 km
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
Highest Point: 2,639 m — Sembalun Crater Rim
Elevation Gain: Approximately +1,539 m
Trekking Duration: Approximately 6–7 hours
- Start of the Trek : Your Rinjani adventure begins after breakfast at your accommodation. At around 7:00 AM, our driver will pick you up and take you to Sembalun Village, approximately 45 minutes away. Upon arrival, complete the required medical check and registration at the Geopark Office before heading to the official trekking starting point. The first day involves approximately 6–7 hours of trekking through a combination of open savannah, gentle forest trails, and increasingly steep terrain. Along the way, there are four designated posts where you can stop for short breaks.
- Starting Point → Pos 1 : The trek begins with a relatively gentle trail featuring a gradual elevation gain. The route passes through light forest before opening into the vast Sembalun savannah. The 3.7 km journey to Pos 1 takes approximately 1.5 hours.
- Pos 1 → Pos 2 : From Pos 1, the trail continues for approximately 1.4 km across open savannah. This section is relatively flat but offers very little shade, so sun protection and sufficient water are essential. It takes approximately 30 minutes to reach Pos 2, where you'll stop for lunch and a 40-minute rest before continuing the trek.
- Pos 2 → Pos 3 : After Pos 2, the trail gradually becomes steeper and more demanding as you approach the higher elevations. The landscape transitions into lighter forest cover, providing some shade along the route. The 1.7 km section to Pos 3 takes approximately 35 minutes.
- Pos 3 → Pos 4 : Beyond Pos 3, the trail becomes noticeably steeper, with an incline of around 25 degrees. Vegetation becomes denser, with more trees and less open grassland. The 850-meter ascent to Pos 4 takes approximately 1 hour. A slower and steady pace is recommended as the terrain becomes increasingly demanding.
- Pos 4 → Sembalun Crater Rim : The final 1.4 km section is the most challenging part of the day. The trail becomes steeper, with loose soil, slippery sections, and large natural steps requiring careful footing. This final ascent takes approximately 2 hours, but the effort is well worth it.
- Sembalun Crater Rim : Upon reaching the Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639 m), settle into your campsite and take in the spectacular scenery surrounding you. From the crater rim, enjoy breathtaking views of Segara Anak Lake, the dramatic volcanic caldera, and the surrounding mountain landscape. As the sun begins to set, watch the sky transform into vibrant colors from the comfort of your campsite.
Rest well tonight—the summit adventure begins early the next morning.

The approximately 3 km ascent takes around 3 hours. The first section starts relatively gently before becoming increasingly steep and sandy. After about an hour, the trail briefly becomes more gradual, but temperatures can drop significantly as you climb above 3,000 meters.
The final section is the most demanding, with steep slopes of around 50 degrees and loose volcanic gravel and sand. Progress can be slow as the loose terrain makes every step more challenging. A steady pace and careful footing are essential.
- Reaching the Summit : After completing the challenging ascent, reach the 3,726-meter summit in time to witness a spectacular sunrise.
From the summit, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views across Lombok Island, the surrounding volcanic landscape, and neighboring Sumbawa Island on a clear morning.
Spend approximately 20 minutes at the summit to enjoy the scenery and capture the moment before beginning the descent back to the campsite. The return journey takes approximately 2 hours.

Follow the same trail back down through the crater rim and savannah landscape. The descent takes approximately 5 hours, with a lunch stop at Pos 2 after around 3 hours of trekking. After lunch and a short rest, continue the final 2-hour descent toward the Sembalun trekking entrance.
- End of the Trek : Upon reaching the Sembalun entrance, our driver will pick you up and transfer you to our office. Collect your remaining luggage, freshen up, and prepare for your onward journey.
