What to Expect on Mount Rinjani
Expect to leave a positive mark on the mountain. We are deeply committed to sustainable trekking practices.
At Hike Mount Rinjani Company, we want you to be fully prepared for the realities of the trail. Conquering Indonesia’s second-highest volcano is one of the most rewarding adventures in Southeast Asia, but it is also a serious physical undertaking.
If you are taking on our fast-paced 2-Day Summit Trek via the Sembalun route, you are in for a highly compressed, breathtaking, and grueling journey. Here is exactly what you can expect on the mountain.
The Terrain: From Savanna to Scree
Your environment will change drastically as you gain altitude.
The Golden Savanna: Starting from Sembalun Village, the first few hours of your trek will lead you through endless, rolling grasslands. The path here is mostly exposed to the sun, with gradual inclines that slowly warm up your legs.
The Seven Hills: As you approach the crater rim, the gradual slopes turn into “The Seven Hills”—a series of steep, rocky switchbacks that will severely test your cardiovascular endurance.
The Volcanic Scree: The final push to the summit is a completely different beast. The trail becomes incredibly steep and narrow, covered in deep, loose volcanic sand and gravel. For every two steps forward, you will likely slide one step back.
The Summit Push
Expect a very early start. You will wake up at your crater rim campsite around 2:00 AM to begin the final ascent in the freezing dark.
This section takes about 3 to 4 hours and requires immense mental focus and stamina. You will be battling altitude, cold winds, and the slippery scree. However, pushing through this physical wall is what makes reaching the 3,726-meter peak so incredibly rewarding.
Epic Panoramas (Without the Lake Descent)
Because the 2-day itinerary is designed to be the fastest route to the top, it intentionally skips the descent down into the caldera to visit Segara Anak Lake and the hot springs. But don’t worry—you won’t miss the views.
From the Crater Rim: You will watch a breathtaking sunset overlooking the deep-blue waters of Segara Anak Lake and the smoking cone of Mount Baru Jari right from your campsite.
From the Summit: At sunrise, you will be standing on the roof of Lombok. On a clear morning, the panoramic views stretch across three islands—you can see Mount Agung on Bali to the west, and the rugged coast of Sumbawa to the east.
An Eco-Friendly Experience
Expect to leave a positive mark on the mountain. We are deeply committed to sustainable trekking practices. Along with packing out 100% of our trash, our 2-day summit program includes an eco-friendly tree-planting initiative. You will have the opportunity to plant a tree on the mountain’s slopes, helping to restore the local ecosystem and preserve the pristine beauty of Mount Rinjani for future generations.
