Mount Rinjani Trekking Insurance

Understand the new 2026 Mount Rinjani trekking insurance requirements. Learn the detailed costs and coverage of the Basic and Premium helicopter rescue tiers.

Trekking Mount Rinjani is a thrilling and physically demanding adventure. Because reaching the 3,726-meter summit involves steep volcanic terrain and remote trails, safety is our highest priority at Hike Mount Rinjani.

In March 2026, the Mount Rinjani National Park Authority (TNGR) introduced strict new safety regulations to improve emergency response times. To legally hike the mountain, all international trekkers must now carry valid insurance that explicitly covers emergency helicopter evacuation.

To streamline this process, the national park operates a two-tiered insurance system. Here is a detailed breakdown of the Basic and Premium insurance tiers, exact costs, and how it impacts your booking with us.

Understanding the Two Tiers of Rinjani Trekking Insurance

When you book a trek, your official e-Rinjani ticket is tied directly to your insurance status. Trekkers must fall under one of the two following categories:

1. Basic / Regular Insurance (Included in Your Package)

Every official Rinjani trekking permit automatically includes a Basic Insurance premium. We seamlessly integrate this cost into all Hike Mount Rinjani packages.

  • Cost: IDR 10,000 (approx. USD $0.60) — Already included in your Hike Mount Rinjani package.

  • What it Covers: Standard medical expenses up to IDR 20,000,000 and limited manual ground-based evacuation (stretcher carry) up to IDR 15,000,000.

  • The Catch: This tier does not include helicopter rescue. Ground evacuation from areas like the crater rim or Segara Anak Lake is physically demanding and can take over 24 hours. Therefore, you are only permitted to use this tier if you have your own personal travel insurance that covers air evacuation.

2. TNGR Premium Trekking Insurance (IDR 290,000)

Introduced in 2026 as a direct response to slow ground evacuations, the Premium Insurance tier is a mandatory upgrade for any trekker who does not have adequate personal travel insurance.

  • Cost: IDR 290,000 (approx. USD $18) per person per trek.

  • Validity: Covers you for the entire duration of your trek (up to 4 days / 4 × 24 hours).

  • What it Covers: The most critical feature of this tier is Helicopter Evacuation with a hoist (up to IDR 260,000,000). It also includes higher compensation limits for medical treatments, search and rescue (SAR) operations, and accidental death.

Do I Have to Buy the Premium Insurance?

Not necessarily. At Hike Mount Rinjani, we encourage our clients to bring their own comprehensive travel insurance. If your personal policy meets the park’s safety standards, you are exempt from the IDR 290,000 Premium fee and will only use the Included Basic Tier.

To qualify for the exemption, your personal travel insurance MUST explicitly cover:

  1. High-Altitude Trekking: Activities up to at least 3,726 meters.

  2. Air Rescue: Emergency medical evacuation via helicopter.

How to claim your exemption: Simply email us a digital copy of your insurance certificate showing your name, policy number, and these specific coverages before your arrival. We will upload this directly to the e-Rinjani system when securing your permits.
